OSNews, Generic OSes Our advertising partner, Cnet Networks, has posted a reader survey, and I promise that they really will give $2000 to three lucky survey respondents. Since they've chosen to place the survey request as an ad itself, and most OSNews readers wouldn't know why Cnet was doing a survey on OSNews anyway, I thought I'd mention that this survey, and the $2000 drawing, are legitimate, and encourage you to participate. They don't want me to link straight to the survey for some reason, but if you see the survey invite above, click on it. Update: I didn't realize this before, but the drawing is only open to US residents.

The survey link is in the ad space at the top of the page, next to the comic link. You may not see it if there are other ads in that space, but keep your eye out for it.

Well that would explain it. I have adblock on. I guess that I'll just have to turn it off for the moment then.

Joachim: [Enterprise is running with shields down] They still haven't raised their shields.
Khan: Raise ours.
Spock: Their shields have gone up.
Khan: Lock phasers on target.
Joachim: Phasers locked on target, sir.
Spock: They're locking phasers.
Kirk: Raise shields!
Khan: Fire!

Unfortunately, you have to turn off the shields to be able to beam anything onto or off the ship....

Rules!

From the rules: "OPEN TO LEGAL U.S. RESIDENTS (EXCLUDING RESIDENTS OF PUERTO RICO), 13 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER AT TIME OF ENTRY"

If you are going to ask for readers to participate in the survey and you try to persuade them with the cash prize then atleast do mention clearly who are eligible! As the rules say, a big portion of OSNews readers are NOT ELIGIBLE, including me.

Just replying to myself: David apparently was pretty quick in updating his post. Still, atleast I am used to checking the rules on any online survey and competition as they are usually just and only for US residents.

As for the survey..I am not going to participate. It's a matter of principles in this case: I am not going to participate in a contest where I am not given a chance to win anything even if others are. If they want international survey results then they should also be prepared to pay the prize internationally.

I get enough spam.
If this company wants to do some market research, they should get off their asses and get out and do it the conventional way.

As an aside, people tend to lie more online than they do in a face to face survey.

$2000???

You mean, they will $2000 SPREAD BETWEEN 3 lucky winners?

So, they'll give an average of $660[sic.] to 3 winners

Correct. There's one $1000 prize, and two $500 ones.

Sure

Done! Hope it helps you guys out ;)

And if you guys use GMail and are worried about spam, just use the old "+" trick to filter out anything from this survey (other than the wining notification which they tell you what the subject will be). username+cnet@gmail.com works just like username@gmail.com.

"Help me become an expert"

Sure, I'll tick that item.

Yes, we have too many experts today.

Please, no more marketing, unless I'm searching for food. ;-)
